iPhones seized by the authorities restarted completely unexpectedly –

The phenomenon is also a mystery to specialists, although several possible explanations can be imagined.

The AppleInsider it was reported the other day that several iPhones seized in connection with crimes restarted completely unexpectedly. All of the affected mobiles were running iOS 18.0 and had not been connected to the network for some time – they were sent for forensic analysis on October 3.

Among the affected devices was one that operated in airplane mode, and one phone was even placed in a Faraday cage to completely isolate it from electrical signals.

Authorities suspect that the reboot may be related to an update to iOS 18. According to some speculations, iPhones running iOS 18 can generate signals that can cause other devices to reboot if they are not connected to the network.

According to the portal’s report, the restarted mobile phones were in the so-called BFU (Before First Unlock) state. This refers to iPhones that turn on but have not yet been jailbroken. Conversely, if an iPhone is unlocked with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID, it is considered an AFU (After First Unlock) device. The unexpected reboots caused the devices to go from AFU to BFU state, making it significantly more difficult for authorities and forensic experts to access data.

The phenomenon seems quite surprising at first, but a simpler explanation is also possible: in October this year, many iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max owners reported that their devices restarted for seemingly no reason. Apple acknowledged the problem and fixed the bug with iOS 18.1.

Considering that the update was released on October 28, it is possible that the same error occurred in the case of seized mobiles, if the devices included at least one Pro or Pro Max model.
