In recent weeks, US authorities have received information about the planned assassination of former US President Donald Trump by Iran, to which the secret services responded by increasing the security of the Republican presidential candidate.

American television CNN reported on this on Tuesday, citing several unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
However, according to CNN sources, there is no indication that Thomas Matthew Crooks, who tried to shoot Trump on Saturday, July 13, during a campaign rally in the US state of Pennsylvania, was connected to Iran.
Information about the threat from abroad and the associated increased security measures around Trump are raising new questions about the security gaps at Saturday’s campaign rally in the city of Butler. There, a 20-year-old assailant shot the former president through the upper part of the first ear with a semi-automatic rifle from the roof.
The US Secret Service and Trump’s team were informed of the Iranian plot before Saturday’s rally, a CNN reporter said on the X social network, citing an unnamed US national security official, Reuters writes.
Iran has repeatedly threatened the United States with revenge for the killing of the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Qasem Soleimani, by American forces under Trump’s presidency in January 2020. Representatives of the then Trump administration have had increased protection since then, CNN reminds.
In August 2022, the US Department of Justice charged a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards with an alleged attempt to organize the assassination of John Bolton, who was Trump’s national security adviser. According to CNN sources, ex-Minister of State Mike Pompeo was also a target of the Iranian regime in the past.
