Iran: Killing of Hamas leader instills fighting spirit in the Middle East

Iran’s UN mission says the killing of Yahya Sinwar, leader of Hamas, will strengthen opposition to Israel in the Middle East.

It writes this in a post on the social media X.

– The spirit of resistance will be strengthened. He (Yahya Sinwar, ed.) will become a role model for the youth and for children who will follow in his footsteps towards the liberation of Palestine, it says.

– As long as obsession and aggression exist, resistance will continue, because the martyr is still alive and remains a source of inspiration.

The nearly 62-year-old Sinwar was killed by Israeli soldiers in Rafah in southern Gaza on Wednesday. Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, announced this in a statement on Thursday evening.

Israeli media have reported that he was one of three Hamas people shot in a building.

Israel’s government and military have said that Sinwar was behind the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, when Hamas crossed the border from Gaza into Israel, killing 1,200 people.

In 2017, Sinwar became the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, but at the beginning of August this year he was appointed as the supreme leader of Hamas. It happened after the previous leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in a bomb attack in Tehran, the capital of Iran.

Iran does not border Israel, nor do the two countries have any direct conflicts over land. Yet they are regarded as fierce enemies.

Iran supports the confrontation of several militant groups against Israel and is the leader of a coalition that is typically called the Axis of Resistance.

Both Hamas, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthi movement in Yemen all have support from Iran.
