Is Aegon II’s dragon Sunfire dead in House of the Dragon?

Aegon II, still standing (or almost)

For once in House of the Dragonepisode 5 of season 2 wastes no time in showing us the damage done by the Dance of Dragons in its first minutes. The series therefore confirms that Rhaenys has passed away, as has her dragon Meleys. On the Green side, Aegon II also almost breathed his last.

The King is finally brought back to King’s Landing, seriously injured, with multiple fractures and burns, but still very much alive. In this episode 5, the throne therefore returns to Aemond Targaryen, who becomes Prince Regent and Protector of the realm.

Sunfire, for his part, was badly damaged in his fight against Meleys. Then, after being hit hard by the flames of Vhagar, Aemond’s dragon, he fell heavily with Aegon II. But episode 5 brings us no news about him. Could he be dead? The original novels by George RR Martin offer us some answers.

Warning, if you don’t want to be spoiled for the rest ofHouse of the Dragonas well as books, we strongly advise you to stop reading here.

An epic destiny ahead for Feux-du-Soleyl

In the series, for the moment, only Rhaenyra mentions the death of the dragon in half-words, during a discussion with Jacaerys, at the end of episode 5. However, if we believe the booksSunfire is still with us. He has thus had to stay at Rooks Rest for a long time, the time to recover from his serious battle wounds. Since the dragon cannot be moved at all, considering its weight, Criston Cole then sends men to watch over it.

In an unsavoury way, the dragon initially feeds on enemy soldiers who have fallen during the fight (yum), before surviving on food brought especially for him. Initially unable to fly, Sunfire eventually regains this ability essential to his survival. And his fate will be crucial for the rest ofHouse of the Dragonwith a major battle between Aegon/Sunfire and Baela/Moondancer. So we can bet that the series will follow the plot of the books, and let the dragon live out his epic destiny, which we can’t wait to see on screen.
