Most people who want to sell their car post the ad online, on various platforms dedicated to the trade of second-hand cars. But, there are still owners who are more traditional and prefer the classic version of the ad. But is it legal to post a car for sale ad in your car window?
According to the law, the car is a private asset, over which the owner has full rights. But once the vehicle is on the public road, several rules must be followed. The same is true if it is in a public parking lot.

Any poster promoting a good, a service or an event must only be pasted in the specially arranged places. These are notice boards, billboards or even special advertising vehicles.
„It constitutes a contravention (…) the use of sound advertising means that can disturb public peace, advertising vehicles that have not obtained permission for temporary advertising or light advertising means that can disturb car and pedestrian traffic”, establishes Art. 49 (h) of Law 185/2013.
Thus, a poster containing information about a vehicle is considered promotional material. So if you leave your car parked in a public area with a for sale ad in the window, it will be considered that you are advertising without the necessary permits.
What happens if you drive around with a car for sale ad in your car window?
Generally, these car sales ads are printed on A4 sheets. Drivers stick them on the side windows, on the rear window and sometimes even on the windshield.
„It is a misdemeanor and is included in the IVth class of sanctions (…) the application of posters, advertisements, inscriptions or accessories on the windshield, rear window or side windows that restrict or blur visibility below the legally allowed limit or prevent or reduce the effectiveness of lighting devices and light signaling or reading the registration number”, provides Art. 102 (36), of the Highway Code.
Class IV provides for the application of a fine between 9 and 20 fine points. Which means a penalty between 1,485 lei and 3,300 lei.
Therefore, drivers who drive with a car sale poster in the window risk being fined up to 3,300 lei.
