Is it legal to transport a dog or cat in a car?

For many, it may not be abnormal to keep the pet in the right seat. On the contrary, it would be easier to control and calm him down if he gets scared or stressed from the road.

But to legally transport a pet in a car, the dog or cat must be in the back seat.

They must also stay in a special animal transport cage. Or to be placed in a car basket for pets. It is similar to the child seat, having several special belts for the puppy or cat.

Another option is the car harness for puppies or cats. This is a kind of collar, which is attached to the neck and chest of the quadruped and then connected to the safety belt.

The purpose of these devices is to keep the quadruped in a fixed point in case of an accident. And, at the same time, to prevent situations where the dog or cat gets scared and could disturb the driver’s attention.

Huge fine for those who do not follow this law

Those who habitually keep their pet in the driver’s or right passenger’s seat face a huge fine.

It constitutes a misdemeanor and is sanctioned with the fine provided for in the IVth class of sanctions (…) the transport of children under 12 years of age or animals in the front seats of vehicles“, states Article 102, Para. 1(27), of the Highway Code.

Therefore, drivers can receive between 9 and 20 fine points, which means a penalty between 1,485 lei and 3,300 lei.
