Is the ITP still valid on the last day, in 2024? How much is the fine for expired ITP

The Periodic Technical Inspection (ITP) has the role of checking the operating condition of a motor vehicle. This inspection is done at different intervals depending on the age of the car and its use. But, in 2024, in the case of cars that received the right to drive, is the ITP still valid on the last day?

When the Periodic Technical Inspection is performed, engineers check several aspects of a car.

First, there is an inspection of the body, chassis, engine and documents. Thus, it is checked whether the structure is not affected by rust, whether the documents are compliant and whether engine modifications or other non-approved systems have somehow been made.

Next, the safety features, steering, brakes and lighting system are analyzed. And, very importantly, an analysis is made of the level of noxes emitted on the exhaust.

According to the law, vehicles with dangerous or serious defects are not given the right to drive. Only cars without problems or with minor defects will be given the right to drive, with a validity of up to 2 years.

Is the ITP still valid on the last day, in 2024?

According to the law, new cars do not have to undergo technical inspection until 3 years after the date of first registration.

Vehicles that are less than 12 years old must undergo a Periodic Inspection every 2 years. And cars that are more than 12 years old from the first registration, will redo the ITP annually.

In the case of taxis or passenger cars, the ITP is done twice a year.

The validity of this Technical Inspection is written on the slip, at the end. Thus, if the date “24.10.2025” is written in that column, for example, it means that the inspection is valid up to and including that date.

So, according to the law, the ITP is valid on the last day specified on the registration certificate.

How much is the fine for expired ITP?

Those who drive with an expired ITP risk receiving two fines at the same time. Because, currently, the law states that a car’s registration is automatically suspended when its technical inspection expires.

Which means that, from that moment, the driver was driving an unregistered car.

Thus, if you are caught with an expired ITP, you risk receiving a fine for driving a car without a valid ITP. And the second fine will apply for driving a car whose registration has been suspended.

Thus, if you are caught with an expired ITP, the minimum fine is 4,785 lei and the maximum can reach 6,600 lei.

In addition, the right to drive for that vehicle will be suspended on the spot, and the license plate and license plates will be seized by the police.

And their recovery will only be possible if the vehicle passes the Periodic Technical Inspection carried out at the RAR (Romanian Auto Registry).
