Yes, no more wondering if the Galaxy Ring is waterproof or not, as it is IP68 certified at 10 ATM. That means it can survive in submersion up to 100 meters of water.
So what do these ratings really mean? Many of us know the numbers, but how are these things measured? We take things from the beginning and go to the year 1976 which is the time period where it was established the IP rating to give manufacturers a standardized method of measuring enclosures for electronic equipment against water and dust. If we want to go even deeper, we will mention that the abbreviation IP stands for “ingress protection rating”. The first number after IP measures dust protection, with the second number referring to water ingress protection.
Remember that no matter how well made something is, no one can guarantee its durability, especially since the protection can be threatened by knocks or drops and the waterproofing degrades over time.
ATM, or atmosphere rating, is all about pressure. An atmosphere equals what you feel right now, the pressure exerted on you by the Earth’s atmosphere. This pressure builds up once you are submerged in water and increases the deeper you go. This is why objects can be crushed if sent to the deepest parts of the Ocean. This is a critical factor in sealing a device because the seals that protect against ingress have to fight harder when water is under pressure. A rating of 1 ATM means that something can withstand the equivalent depth or force of 10 meters, e.g. heavy rain, snow or splash. The 50 ATM rating on the Galaxy Ring means the device will remain functional up to 100 meters.
To take off or not to take off the Galaxy Ring when swimming?
Samsung does not provide warranty coverage for water damage. This is true for most smartwatches, although various company promotions often include photos and videos of people swimming with them. So while you should be fine it might be best to secure the device with something like Samsung Care+ if you plan on swimming regularly.
Either way the Galaxy Ring is expensive and weird, but it’s also promising. Something as thin as a ring is much more comfortable than a watch for many people, and only having to charge it once a week is much better than the two days that most watches provide!
