Is the piece a Kappa brand?

Yes, it really did start with K socks. And everyone wanted to wear them. And so the Kappa trademark was born. But it wasn’t that simple, the brand has had a turbulent past.

Kappa is an Italian company that was founded a long time ago – already on 12.11. in 1916 under the name Calzificio Torinese joint-stock company. The owners were Abram Vitale, Guglielmo Marengo and Ettore Gaetano Donn. As repayment of the debt, the partners acquired a machine for processing cotton, and so the production of socks could begin. It profited mainly during the Second World War, when the company’s sales were mainly in the army sector, where it did not stay only with socks, but also added other knitted pieces.

To increase credibility, the company inspected the products more and marked such products with the monogram K (K – Kontroll) to indicate maximum quality according to German standards.

And it was a sock so popular that everyone actually wanted to wear it. This is how the Kappa trademark was born and the company became the business leader on the Italian market in socks and underwear. In 1968, the inspiration for the military style came from a young Maurizio Vitale (carrier of the family and owner of the company), who saw John Lennon during one of his speeches, while Lennon was wearing an army military shirt.

A military boom was born when Vitale had his company’s underwear dyed army green and marked with signs, coats of arms and symbols. In 1969, the today very well-known logo was created and again by accident. During a photoshoot for the Beatrix swimwear catalog, the boy and girl who were the models for the shoot wanted to rest and sat on the floor with their backs to each other. The silhouette created by their shadow was noticed by Maurizio Vitale and based on this inspiration he created a new logo – Omini.
