As students from Kim Il-sung University of Politics were mobilized in large numbers to the flood recovery site in Seoho-ri, Uiju County, North Pyongan Province, North Korea, it was reported that their parents were rushing to visit them carrying supplies, creating an untimely competition.
According to Daily NK’s North Pyongan Province source on the 11th, students from Kim Il-sung Political University, who are scheduled to graduate next spring, were deployed to the Seoho-ri flood recovery site in Uiju County early last month and are still working there.
Meanwhile, it is said that the students’ parents are competitively gathering supplies and rushing to the site to make sure that their children do not fall behind economically while they are mobilized.
A source said, “Students who go abroad openly ask their parents for support because they don’t want to appear economically backward, and parents also bring supplies to help their children stand out,” adding, “As a result, there are more and more visits to work sites where students from Kim Il Sung Political University are deployed.”
North Korea presented flood recovery as a top priority at the 22nd Political Bureau Emergency Expanded Meeting of the 8th Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea in late July. Accordingly, the General Political Bureau of the North Korean Army mobilized graduating class students from Kim Il Sung Political University to the Seoho-ri disaster recovery site in Uiju County, North Pyongan Province. According to sources, the students are preparing all daily necessities, including work clothes, on their own.
A source said, “Students at the Political Science College, who were only studying at university, are being mobilized to external sites and are demanding to see their parents, saying they need necessities and money. The parents, heartbroken by this, are competitively visiting the sites to provide financial help.”
At first, it was reported that parents of students whose hometowns were mainly in Sinuiju or Uiju County came to visit with personal belongings and supplies for the workshop. However, other students envied this and started calling home one by one to appeal, and this month, parents of students from distant areas even came to visit, and the atmosphere is said to be heating up as if it is a competition.
A source said, “There were cases where they came to visit from three different homes on the same day,” and “one parent, who had nothing to live on, went into debt to take care of everything and even brought a pig they had been raising, but they looked the most miserable.”
Kim Il-sung Political University is an educational institution that aims to train the best political commanders in the North Korean military, and it is known that its graduates are actually guaranteed key positions within the military.
“Parents consider it an honor for their children to attend Kim Il-sung Political University,” the source said. “As a result, they hope that their children will not fall behind economically and will stand out during the external mobilization period that the party values, so they do their best to gather supplies despite their limited means and competitively look for workplaces.”
