Ads are slowly making their way into almost every consumer electronics, and will soon become standard on smart TVs as well. Korean LG because it has started to implement ads directly into the user interface of its smart TVs, and it will be a rather unpleasant type of ads.

New unwanted feature of LG TV

A new era is beginning for LG smart TVs – they will learn to display ads, and it will not only be small ads hidden in the user interface, but also full-screen ones. The ads first started appearing on select LG TV models, including more expensive ones like the new LG G4 OLED panel model, as informs web FlatPanelsHD.

Full-screen ads appear before the screen saver starts on the TV. It is not yet clear how long these ads will be or if LG will make this feature available to all markets in the world or if it will only be a few pre-selected markets where they have a higher tolerance for ads.

Ads can be turned off for now

Fortunately, LG allows you to turn off these ads in the TV settings, specifically in the More settings section. There should be an item called Promotional Screen Saver where you will find a switch to disable this feature. However, ads will continue to appear in, for example, the app store.

The reason for the introduction of ads may be that users often do other things while watching TV, especially on smartphones, such as browsing social networks, playing games or chatting. For many people, the TV is just a backdrop, and LG wants to take advantage of this by showing ads when users are not paying attention to the TV. This is why ads are displayed before the screen saver is activated.

Will full-screen ads expand to all TVs?

LG is currently testing this feature on a limited number of TVs, and it is not yet clear whether it will be extended to all models. If this happens, other TV manufacturers could follow the trend, such as Samsung or Sony.

In the future, we could see a much more aggressive style of ads that would appear after a certain interval regardless of how you use the TV. Pre-screensaver ads can be the first test of what consumers can tolerate when it comes to advertising messages.
