Foreign. After 15 months of war in Gaza, Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement on a ceasefire, which includes the release of hostages. It reports BBC News.
Sources to CBS and the BBC confirm that the talks, led by Qatar’s prime minister, have resulted in an agreement.
The agreement means that Hamas, which is still said to be holding 94 Israelis as hostages, releases them in exchange for Israel releasing approximately 1,000 Palestinian hostages. However, Israeli authorities believe that only 60 of the hostages held by Hamas are still alive.
“We have a deal,” announced US President-elect Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform. About the hostages held by Hamas, he writes:
“They will be released shortly. Thank you very much.”
At the same time, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announces that the agreement is ready to be implemented and that it is now “up to Hamas to act”.
The Israeli government is expected to hold a security meeting to formally approve the deal.
Qatar, along with the United States and Egypt, have acted as mediators in the negotiations.
