Israel carried out an airstrike on Thursday against the Syrian capital, Damascus, and one of its suburbs. At least 15 people were killed in the attack, and another 16 people were injured, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported.
The target of the attacks was one building at a time. The Israeli army confirmed the fact of the attack, emphasizing that it attacked targets linked to terrorists. It was reported that the infrastructure facilities and command centers of the Palestinian Islamist organization Islamic Jihad in Syria were hit and caused significant damage.
The airstrikes in Damascus were carried out shortly before Ali Larijani, an adviser to Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme religious and political leader, was to meet with representatives of Palestinian organizations at the Iranian embassy in Mazzeh. SANA reported that the Israeli army also attacked a bridge in the Qusair area, near the border with northern Lebanon.
Israel has already carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria in recent years, targeting the leaders of the Lebanese Shiite militant movement Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups. On Thursday, Israel also attacked Lebanese targets, more intensively than in recent days. According to local media, at least nine people were killed and five were wounded in Baalbek, located in the eastern part of the country and considered a stronghold of Hezbollah, and Israel did not warn the local civilians before the attack.
