BarcelonaThe Israeli military has announced that it has launched a series of airstrikes against Iranian territory. Around one in the morning, Iranian state media reported that several loud explosions had occurred in Tehran, the capital of Iran. According to several witnesses, the detonations took place in the western part of the city, where the headquarters of the Revolutionary Guard is located. But at the moment it is not known the scale of the attack or what damage it has caused.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that the military is conducting “precision strikes against military targets” in Iran in response to “months of continued attacks by the Iranian regime against the State of Israel”. “Iran’s regime and its proxies in the region have not stopped attacking Israel since October 7,” insists the statement, which adds that the “defensive and offensive capabilities (of the IDF) are fully mobilized” and that they “will do whatever is necessary to defend the State of Israel and the people of Israel.”
For weeks there has been speculation about a possible attack by Israel on Iranian territory, after Iran carried out the biggest attack in its history against Israel, its great enemy in the Middle East, last October 1. In particular, Tehran fired about 200 missiles against Israeli territory, and they hit the main cities, such as Tel-Aviv, Jerusalem or Haifa. In this way, the regime of the Ayatollahs sought to avenge the assassination in Tehran of the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in an attack attributed to Israel last July 31; and that of the leader of the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, in Beirut last September 29, also by a Hebrew projectile.
The Iranian attack on Israel lasted an hour and caused no casualties or significant material damage, as most of the projectiles were intercepted by the Hebrew state’s sophisticated anti-aircraft defense. “They made a mistake and they will pay for it,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the time, implying that Israel would not stand idly by and respond with another attack.
The long-awaited response to Iran comes just eleven days before the US election. In a recent call, former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump offered Netanyahu his full support. “Do whatever you have to do,” he told her, according to six people with knowledge of the call.
