Israeli-Moldovan Rabbi Zvi Kogan, who has been missing since Thursday, has been found dead in the United Arab Emirates, according to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office.
Reuters writes that on Sunday morning.
That he has been found dead has not yet been confirmed by the United Arab Emirates.
On Saturday, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement that an investigation had been launched into Zvi Kogan’s disappearance.
It also appears from the statement that the United Arab Emirates had launched an investigation based on information that Zvi Kogan’s disappearance was related to “a terrorist incident”.
The Israeli prime minister’s office writes that Zvi Kogan was the victim of a murder and that it is a “heinous anti-Semitic terrorist act”.
According to Reuters, Zvi Kogan was a representative of the Chabad movement in the United Arab Emirates.
Chabad is a group within Orthodox Judaism with branches in several places around the world.
The movement aims to reach out to secular Jews or other groups within Judaism to strengthen their faith.
The Chabad movement’s headquarters in the United States announced earlier this week that Zvi Kogan had disappeared in Dubai.
According to Reuters, the state news agency of the United Arab Emirates wrote that the country’s interior ministry had launched an investigation into the rabbi’s disappearance.
In 2020, the United Arab Emirates and Israel established diplomatic relations by signing the Abraham Accords, with the United States acting as mediator.
The Abraham agreements involving, among other things, trade agreements and direct air connections between the countries.
In addition, Israel was recognized by the United Arab Emirates through the Abraham Accords.
