The Israeli military said it had targeted Hezbollah’s headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday, following an attack that shook the Lebanese capital and sent thick clouds of smoke over the city.

Hezbollah’s al-Manar TV announced that four buildings were destroyed and that there were many casualties following multiple strikes.

In a televised statement, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said the central command center was in the middle of civilian areas. Images broadcast by al-Manar TV showed at least one smoking crater at the site of the attack.

Security sources in Lebanon said the attack targeted an area where high-ranking Hezbollah officials usually stay. This was the most powerful attack in Beirut in almost a year of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
