Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, whose dismissal was announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, officially resigned on the 8th and Foreign Minister Israel Katz took office as his successor.

Israel was greatly shocked by Minister Gallant’s dismissal, and large-scale protests took place across the country.

Secretary Gallant was seen as the only moderate voice in Netanyahu’s far-right government. His dismissal is being seen as a sign that Netanyahu’s government has lost interest in freeing the remaining hostages still held in Gaza by Hamas.

In his resignation speech, Gallant thanked the military and said, “The mission of the war is not yet complete.” We must fulfill our moral and traditional obligations. “The purpose of the war is to bring back the remaining 101 hostages who are still being held,” he warned.

New Defense Minister Israel Katz is a long-time supporter of Prime Minister Netanyahu and a veteran cabinet member. “The goals of the war are to prevent Iranian aggression and deny its capabilities, dismantle Hamas as a ruling and military force, and defeat Hezbollah,” he said.

But Katz also added that freeing the hostages was a top moral priority.

Katz continued, “I promise that the entire nation of Israel will emerge from this war and suffering to a much greater height.”
