A new password-stealing scam is spreading on the popular social media site.
In the past few years, various scams, frauds and deceptions have become incredibly sophisticated. While almost everyone is aware by now that there is no African prince gifting us with any fairy-tale fortune, the methods of scams have improved tremendously over the past decade.
Many times, the methods used are based on our fears of such attacks, and are hidden behind seemingly trivial everyday things. Most of the time, one click at the wrong time on a page that looks familiar is enough. While in the past, these scams mainly applied for our sensitive data via email or phone, nowadays, SMS scams are common, and almost every time they aim to obtain our sensitive data.
Although Facebook has also been involved in similar crimes, until now it has typically not been the most popular scene for similar frauds. The cyber security company Trustwawe recently published a report about the proliferation of business sites and advertisements whose primary purpose is to obtain our passwords.
According to the experts participating in the research, deception primarily affects sites that encourage us to download some kind of imaging program or AI platform with the help of a page that sounds similar to the original, but it has also happened that a website has been hacked for this reason.
When we give in to the offer appearing in the Facebook news feed and download such software, we also install a password stealing program on our computer in addition to the desired image editor or video game. In such cases, our attackers gain access to all the information most important to them – browsing history, authentication data, bank card data.
In addition, the Facebook page of the attacked person also falls into the hands of criminals, which they can use for further deception, now by compromising the digitally robbed person. The experts conducting the research warn that the method may also affect other platforms, so it’s good if YouTube and Linkedln users keep their eyes open.
