At Wednesday’s session of the Metropolitan Assembly, a long discussion took place about the proposal submitted by Mayor Gergely Karácsony, which brings serious changes to parking. The proposal was finally voted by the majority, thus:
- from 2026 free parking for cars with green license plates will cease;
- until mid-2026 the parking machines will disappear, parking can be arranged in the BudapestGO app, presumably without a convenience fee;
- a discount is given to BKK season ticket holders who park in BudapestGO;
- From July 2026 tariffs will be raised, and parking in zones A and B (downtown) will also be paid for on weekends;
- cars and SUVs heavier than 1.8 tonnes are charged double parking fees (but there is still a legal hurdle to this at the moment).
In zone A, instead of the current HUF 600, an hour will cost HUF 800 every day of the week between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. In zone AB, instead of HUF 450, you should pay HUF 600, also every day, but only until 8 p.m. In the AC zone, the fee will be HUF 400 instead of the current HUF 300. And in the AD zone, it would be HUF 300 instead of HUF 200 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
