A few days ago it was known that Storm Bert would approach Portugal and with it bring a depression over Portuguese territory this weekend. And, with this getting worse, late this Sunday afternoon, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued an orange warning for six districts (Aveiro, Braga, Porto, Viseu, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real) due to rain and strong winds. Staying in a sheltered location is advisable after six in the afternoon.
On the coast north of Cabo de Sines and in the highlands of the North and Center regions, gusts are also expected that can reach values above 75 km/h or even reach 100 km/h, indicates the IPMA in a statement. In addition to the rain and wind, there are “waves from the southern quadrant of between 2 and 3.5 meters, changing to waves from the northwest and increasing to 4 to 5 meters on the 25th on the western coast, especially north of Cabo Raso”.
Although the sea water temperature is at or even above the temperature recorded in summer (17/19ºC), it is not advisable to go swimming. The regions of Lisbon and Porto will not be spared from this turbulence of the weather.
For the South Region, the forecast is for less heavy rain and thunderstorms. The wind should blow more moderately (20 to 30 km/h), not exceeding 40 km/h on the west coast, but gusts of twice this speed may appear.
With the forecast of heavy precipitation in the North and Center regions, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) points to the risk of flooding in the Mondego, Vouga, Douro, Cávado, Lima and Minho basins, taking into account the increase in their respective flows.
