It will soon become clear whether iPadOS passes the EU test

The competition law body of the European Union may soon launch a compliance investigation to find out whether the world’s most popular tablet operating system, iPadOS, meets the stricter requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) for digital gatekeepers.

After an eight-month investigation, the European Commission notified Apple at the end of April that it was granting iPadOS gatekeeper status due to its market share and influence.

During the investigation, the committee found that Apple locked iPadOS users into the platform’s ecosystem, and the number of business users exceeded the amount needed to cross the gatekeeper threshold by “eleven times”, while the number of end users was “closer to the threshold”, but expected to increase will in the near future.

According to the DMA, after the available six-month grace period, iPadOS must comply with a number of regulations that allow European users to download applications from sources outside the App Store and to remove applications that come pre-installed on the iPad. In addition, users should be given more freedom to choose default services such as browsers.

Apple’s operating system, iOS, which runs on iPhones, as well as the Safari browser and the App Store are also considered gatekeeper services, which led the company to make a series of regional changes for European users, such as allowing the use of alternative application markets in the European economic in the area. The first of the latter became available on iPads in mid-September.
