Italy discusses telecom deal with SpaceX

The Italian government is said to be in advanced discussions with SpaceX about the purchase of telecom and data services from satellite company Starlink.

According to Bloomberg news agency it’s about a contract worth $1.5 billion for five years.

Under the agreement, SpaceX will provide signal encryption and telecom and data services for the military. This means: signals on and around the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, Defense must be able to make telephone calls via Musk’s satellites with regular smartphones in emergency situations. This technology has recently come into operation.

The British government holds exploratory conversations met Kuiperthe broadband project that Amazon will build in space. The first test satellites are orbiting the Earth, but the network cannot be compared to Starlink in size and capacity.

Last month, the European Union ordered the construction of its own satellite network that can beam telecom and broadband to Earth. This project is called Iris2. If everything goes according to plan, companies and governments will be able to use broadband in the most remote areas in the EU and surrounding areas by 2030.

On December 16, the European Commission granted a twelve-year license to the newly established consortium SpaceRISE. This will allocate 10.6 billion euros to the construction of a network with 290 space codes. Of this, 61 percent is financed from public funds.

Italy’s security and intelligence services have reviewed the technical details of the deal and appear to have no objections.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni presents herself as a Trump messenger. The presidential candidate, in turn, maintains close ties with SpaceX boss Elon Musk.
