Italy supports, Spain opposes the establishment of refugee camps in Albania

The government in Madrid opposes the establishment of asylum centers in third countries for illegal immigrants transferred from the territory of the European Union, it was revealed from the statements made by the members of the cabinet in recent days, in which they reacted to the proposal of the president of the European Commission.

MTI reports that Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz argued in favor of a migration policy that must protect international laws and human rights. He emphasized that Spain continues to work for the establishment of regulated and safe migration routes, in cooperation with the sending and transit countries against human trafficking mafias. He drew parallels between Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s plan, noting that the latter is basically a flagrant violation of international laws and human rights, which is why he rejects it completely.

Based on an agreement between the Italian and Albanian governments, Albania opened reception camps for illegal immigrants picked up by the Italian Coast Guard in international waters.

Spanish government spokeswoman Pilar Alegría recalled to a journalist’s question after Tuesday’s meeting of the government in Madrid: Spain has already criticized this approach to the problem. As he said, the cabinet continues to represent the humanitarian and supportive application of the EU migration pact, which seeks a balance between responsibility and solidarity. He urged that the agreement be put into practice as soon as possible.

The number of refugees flowing into the European Union has noticeably decreased, but if a route is closed to refugees, they choose a more dangerous one

In comparison, according to the Roman government, the Italian migrant centers established in Albania will reduce the costs spent on the primary reception of immigrants in the long term. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said in the Rome Parliament on Wednesday that, according to calculations, the operation of the camps opened in Shengjin and Gjader costs the Italian budget 134 million euros per year. It is an investment that, in the long term, will significantly reduce the costs of the so-called primary care provided in Italy upon arrival, which represents an annual expenditure of 1.7 billion euros for the Italian state – he believed.

The politician called the camps in Albania unique, which serve simultaneously as an arrival registration center, a detention point during the expedited processing of asylum applications and a deportation center. A prison has also been set up in the area of the camps for those who are dangerous or have committed crimes, explained the head of the ministry. He added that the camps in Albania serve to combat illegal migration without violating basic human rights.
