“It’s all about the details” Small but practical changes in iOS 18

Apple has released iOS 18, packed with new Home screen customization options, an all-new Control Center, RCS support and Messages features, a new Photos app, and more.

Apple Intelligence is rolling out in phases starting with iOS 18.1, but the first iOS 18 release still includes plenty of new features.

After downloading and applying the update, you can easily spend an evening just trying out and learning all the major new features. But sometimes, it’s the little tweaks and changes that make the biggest difference in how you use your iPhone. We’ve rounded up some of the smaller, lesser-known changes that make a real difference to users.

Improved phone functions

Recent Calls search lets you find previous calls using numbers, names, or words left in recorded voicemails.

The microphone automatically selects voice isolation, wide spectrum, or standard depending on the conditions. You can also change it manually in the control center.

Keypad search allows you to search for contacts using both numbers and combinations of letters and numbers (such as abc123) by entering numbers on the keypad.

There are a lot of changes in the Photos app. The Photos app overhaul is a key change in iOS 18. Let’s scroll down in the app to check out the Receipts section.

The Receipts section literally organizes receipts, QR codes, documents, photos with handwriting, and photos with illustrations/drawings into categories.

Don’t forget to scroll all the way to the bottom of the Photos app and select Customize & Reorder to choose which categories you want to display and in what order you want them. The new Photos app will look much better after you customize it.

message

Satellite connectivity is no longer just for SOS and emergency services. It can also send messages (SMS and iMessage) to friends and family and update the Find My Location feature. If you lose your mobile network connection for a while, notifications will guide you through the process.

Changing text effects and formatting can completely transform your iMessage (iMessage only). Look for the “=A” symbol on the right side of the word suggestion bar, or highlight a word and choose “Text Effects” from the overhead menu.

Wondering how RCS works? When you send an RCS message to an Android user, the text field will say “Text Message – RCS” instead of “Text Message – SMS.” To check if your carrier supports RCS, open Settings > General > About and scroll down to Carrier. Tap on your carrier and it will change to IMS status. If it says Voice, SMS, and RCS, then it’s available.

You can also schedule an iMessage to be sent later. Type your message, tap the ‘+’ sign to the left of the text entry field, and then select Send Later.

Lock screen

Don’t forget to change your lock screen shortcuts! You don’t have to just have a flashlight and a camera anymore! Long press on your lock screen, tap Customize just like you did when editing your wallpaper and widgets, then tap Lock screen. You can open apps, Shazam a song, scan a QR code, turn on airplane mode, run shortcuts, and more.

These controls are also available from the Motion buttons (Settings > Motion buttons), although they are not available on the lock screen.

map

Currently only supported in the US and Japan. To use the new terrain map, simply zoom in on an area outside of your city, near a national park or hiking trail.
Searching for ‘hiking’ will bring up hiking trails, and tapping on one will allow you to create a custom route. You can create a one-way, round-trip, or loop, and it will show you the distance, time, and elevation graph for your hike. Hiking trails are currently only available in the United States.

calculating machine

At first glance, the calculator app doesn’t look much different. However, if you tap the list icon in the top left, you can see your past calculations. Tap to go back, or long-press to select an option to copy the expression or result.

You can switch between standard, scientific, and math notes by pressing the calculator icon in the bottom left. There’s also a nice unit/currency converter.

calendar

In the month view, pinch to zoom to show more or fewer events for each day. Reminders with a date/time will also appear in the Calendar app.

camera

The 3-second shutter timer was too short, and 10 seconds was too long. Now there’s a new 5-second timer. And music playing in your car or on your Bluetooth speakers will no longer stop playing when you take a photo or video.

Check out the new Portrait Lighting controls and Night Mode portraits too.

file

You can keep the document on your iPhone by long-pressing the file and selecting Keep Downloaded. (Changes to the file will sync when you’re online.)

It supports more external drive formats, including APFS, exFAT, and FAT32. Finally, you can also erase the external drive. Just long-tap and select Erase.
