Jaguar buys back its electric cars from owners

The electric Jaguar I-PACE, the brand’s first electric car, went on sale in 2018 and, in addition to achieving good initial sales figures, won the prestigious 2019 Car of the Year award in Europe and the United States. But sales soon slowed and, worse, complications began.

The problem with the Jaguar I-PACE in the United States began in May 2023, when NHTSA found that the battery of some of these electric SUVs produced in 2018 and 2019 could overheat, which could cause a fire, and requested from their owners to limit charging to 80% and park away from buildings.

Jaguar then installed new software that monitored the state of the battery during charging and was supposed to fix the problem, but it didn’t. In October 2023, I-PACEs were recalled again for the same reason as the solution proposed by the brand did not seem to work properly, reports HAK magazine.

Finally, and in order to avoid adding to the bad image of the brand, since three more electric SUVs produced in 2019 have suffered fires this year, Jaguar management has decided to buy back 2760 examples of Jaguar I-PACE from their current owners on November 11 .

These I-PACEs are examples for the US market and were manufactured between January 5, 2018 and March 14, 2019. It is not yet known at what price they will be bought.
