Awaited by fans, season 2 of Peacemaker will arrive in 2025. The director James Gunn has just revealed important information about it: the place occupied by the series in the DCU.
What place for Peacemaker in the DCU?
In July 2021, James Gunn makes a big splash with the film The Suicide Squad. The director of the films Guardians of the Galaxy of Marvel was commissioned by Distinguished Competition to write and produce a sequel/reboot of the film Suicide Squad by David Ayerwhich was destroyed by critics and the public. Despite disappointing box office receipts due to the Covid-19 pandemic, The Suicide Squad garnered very positive reviewsnotably for its immense respect for the original material and its dynamic and inventive staging. Warner Bros. Discovery has approved the production of a spin-off series, Peacemakerwritten and partly directed by James Gunn. There too, the filmmaker’s work was acclaimed.
These repeated successes led Warner Bros. to appoint James Gunn as artistic director of DC Studios and task him with developing a new cinematic universe, the DCU, in place of an increasingly criticized DC Extended Universe which officially ended with the films The Flash et Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. From now on, apart from the films and series belonging to Matt Reeves’ Batverse (The Batman, The Penguin), DC will focus on James Gunn’s DCUwhich will begin with the animated series Creature Commandos – scheduled for December 2024 – and the film Superman in July 2025. And nothing remains of the late DCEU!
Yes… But what place for Peacemaker ? The series began under the DCEU and is the only work to continue despite the existence of the DCU.. It is true that the question of whether or not Peacemaker to the new DC cinematic universe was not very clear. During an interview given to IGNas part of the promotion of Creature CommandosJames Gunn was able to clarify the situation. “The truth is that almost All Peacemaker is canon except for the appearance of the Justice League…which we will sort of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker.”, he confides. The filmmaker also explains that the animated series Creature Commandos will explicitly reference events from the film The Suicide Squad and the series Peacemaker. “So these things automatically become canon.“.
As a reminder, the boss of HBO recently announced that season 2 of Peacemakerof which we recently discovered the first short teaser, will be launched in August 2025. We can’t wait to discover it!
