James Gunn reveals more about his Batman

The DC Universe (DCU) officially launched in late 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos. But, the fans are especially waiting for the Superman by James Gunn on July 9. Recently, James Gunn addressed the Batman subject, and revealed some major information about the Bruce Wayne of his DCU.

The DCU is officially launched

For the few bad students at the back of the class, we’ll give you another overview. During 2022, Warner Bros made the decision to end his DC Extended Universe (DCEU). This connected universe has spread over 10 years and 16 filmsof Man of Steel in 2013, at Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. Faced with the increasingly convincing critical and financial failure of the DCEU, Warner Bros. has decided to put an end to this connected universe. The studio, at the same time, hired the director James Gunn and the producer Peter Safran to take back the reins of DC Films. The two men then decided to reboot the DCEU and give birth to the DC Universe. James Gunn, however, wanted to keep certain characters, particularly from his own productions: The Suicide Squad and the series Peacemaker.

Peacemaker

Last December, James Gunn officially launched the DCU with his animated series Creature Commandoswhich is clearly a continuation of the two aforementioned works by James Gunn. This animated series also offered fans, this week, the Batman’s very first appearance in the DCU.

What about Batman?

This week’s episode of Creature Commandos has in fact, through a plan, proposed to fans the first official Batman design in the DCU. We see very briefly the Dark Knight. Not enough to get a concrete idea but it’s a start. In a recent interview with ComicBookMovieJames Gunn addressed the future of Batman in the DCU. A film around the character is already in preparation. Indeed, James Gunn and Peter Safran entrusted the realization of The Brave and the Bold has Andy Muschietti (the opportunity for him to make up for his infamous The Flash).

Batman in Creature Commandos

Not much is known about this project yet, but The Brave and the Bold should especially focus on Damian Waynethe son of Bruce Wayne, and the future Robin du DCU. Here are James Gunn’s comments regarding Batman’s appearance in Creature Commandos :

When they gave me permission to use Batman, we wanted to show a lot more. Except that Batman we see him often. And I didn’t know how to approach this cameo. So I said to myself, let’s show it in silhouette. It’s just a way to introduce Batman and say that he exists in this universe. It already exists in this universe and is already anchored. As is the case in Superman. People already know about Superman. We don’t need to revisit their origin stories. Batman will be an important part of this universe. I love Batman. I’ve loved it since I was little. He’s one of my favorite characters. We are going to do great things with him. After all, he’s the most popular superhero in the world. And I can’t wait for people to see more of him, and see him with Superman.

Reassuring words regarding the line that the DCU is about to take. James Gunn is not going to repeat past mistakes by starting from scratch. DC characters are sufficiently identified in the minds of spectators. James Gunn is right not to completely reboot the DCEU universe, but rather to offer continuitywith, obviously, major changes. Looking forward to seeing what happens next!
