At the World Matchplay, darts prodigy Luke Littler was knocked out in the first round by Michael van Gerwen. A setback that doesn’t really fit with the last few months in which the 17-year-old has been celebrating victories one after the other. James Wade is convinced that this won’t be the last setback for “The Nuke”.
Luke Littler’s meteoric rise to the top of the world has given darts a real boom in recent months. When the 17-year-old plays, the halls are full and the viewing figures are phenomenal. This made his first-round exit at the World Matchplay against Michael van Gerwen all the more disappointing, as he lost 6-10 after an average performance.
If it’s up to James Wade, it won’t be the last disappointment for “The Nuke”. Yes, the teenager is simply incredible, Wade admitted in the “Sky Sports” interview, but: “Do I think it will continue like this for him? I’m not sure.”
Wade: Darts needs Luke Littler
Wade added that he could agree with Glen Durrant’s statements about Littler: “He said that he (Littler) could dominate for either two or ten years. I’m not quite sure which of the two it will be.”
He hopes the Littler magic continues, said “The Machine”. “Because the sport of darts needs someone like him. He is influential, financially profitable and a drawcard. I am very interested to see what he will do.”
It is clear to Wade that Littler’s stock will not be on the rise forever. “It will go downhill for him too, 100 percent. What I hope then is that England doesn’t pick on him, but supports him. He will have problems and things will be difficult for him. Then we will really see what he is made of,” said “The Machine”.
