Led by top star Jannik Sinner, Italy was the last team to reach the semi-finals of the Davis Cup.
In the quarter-finals in Malaga, the Italians beat Argentina 2-1 on the way to their third title in the traditional national competition thanks to Sinner’s victories in singles and doubles.
“We are good friends in the team and want to make our country proud,” said Sinner: “My singles wasn’t that long, so I was still able to play the doubles. Matteo Berrettini carried me through the match, he played incredibly.”
In the fight for the final ticket, the world number one and his colleagues will now face Australia on Saturday (1 p.m./DAZN), which beat the USA 2-1 on Thursday.
The German team had already qualified for the semi-finals on Wednesday and will meet the Netherlands on Friday (5 p.m./DAZN).
Strong nerves in doubles
Late on Thursday evening, Sinner was the decisive man and saved the day for the favorites against the outsiders from South America.
Italy’s Olympic bronze medalist Lorenzo Musetti initially had a surprising 4:6, 1:6 defeat against Francisco Cerundolo. Sinner then equalized with a confident 6:2, 6:1 against Sebastian Baez.
In the doubles, Sinner was allowed to play with Berrettini, the duo was preferred to the Australian and French Open finalists Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.
The two Italians won 6:4, 7:5 against the doubles specialists Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni
