Japan orders Toyota to make “dramatic reforms” after new certification violations

The Japanese government has ordered Toyota to make “drastic reforms” after discovering new violations in the automaker’s vehicle certification procedures.

In a so-called corrective order, Japan’s transport ministry said on-site inspections revealed widespread, deliberate irregularities in ten additional models (Toyota Prius a, Lexus RX, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Camry, Daihatsu Altis, Toyota Noah, Toyota Voxy, Suzuki Landy , previously undisclosed Toyota Harrier, Lexus LM.

Toyota said the corrective order instructed it to “make drastic reforms to ensure proper certification operations.”

The automaker added that it was in the process of confirming compliance with the requirements for the affected models and that customers did not need to stop using the affected cars.

Earlier this month, Toyota said it had detected no new cases of infringement in car model certification applications beyond those it had already reported in June.

Toyota, Mazda, Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha admitted in June that they had submitted either faulty or falsified data when applying to certify their cars.
