Jelgava Regional Council Elects New Chairman

On Friday, a deputy from the former Ozolnieki region was elected as the new chairman of the Jelgava Regional Council Uldis Ainars (“New Unity”).

He was the only candidate for the position. Ainars had the support of 12 colleagues, and one was against. Of the 15 ballots allocated, 13 were valid.

Ainars stated that his priority is to destroy the borders and ensure that the residents of the former Jelgava and Ozolnieki regions look at each other kindly.

The new chairman of the Duma was elected on the day set as the deadline for providing explanations to the Ministry of Smart Governance and Regional Development about the work of the Duma and the failure to elect a mayor for several months.

Still deputy chairman of the regional Duma Irina Dolgova (“Consent”) effectively acted as the mayor of the region, since the region had no chairman of the Duma for months after the then chairman of the Duma resigned on April 3 Madar Lasmanis (“For the development of Latvia”).

Before Dolgova’s election, the deputy chairman of the Duma, Ilze Vitola (LKS), was removed from her post.
