Joe Biden allows Ukraine to use US long-range missiles inside Russia
American officials declared for The New York Times that the weapons will probably be used initially against Russian and North Korean troops in defense of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region of western Russia.
Ukraine’s authorization to use long-range missiles, known as ATACMS, comes in response to Russia’s decision to bring North Korean troops into the fight, officials said.
Biden’s decision is a sea change in US politics. The election has divided his advisers, and the change comes two months before President-elect Donald Trump takes office next January.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has repeatedly asked US officials to allow Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles to strike deeper into Russia, but President Joe Biden has opposed this.
Until this moment, Ukraine could attack with such missiles only near the border and only in a defensive role.
