Grunge is known for many things, but producing guitar heroes is not one of them. However, according to Joe Satriani – to a man who knows a thing or two about the subject – grunge had its share of great guitarists, and Kurt Cobain is among them.
In the new edition of the magazine Classic Rockon the occasion of the release G3 Reunion Live DVDSatriani expresses admiration for the late Nirvana frontman’s playing.
“I was very happy with those Nirvana albums,” says Satriani. “He was a great guitarist. If you look at Nirvana records, you realize that Kurt plays everything he needs to. He doesn’t look where he’s playing, which means he really knows the instrument. And playing with one of the greatest drummers of all time, Dave Grohlwhich wouldn’t have been possible if Kurt wasn’t a good guitarist.”
Satriani’s career was already established before the Nirvana album Nevermind started the grunge explosion, thanks to albums like Surfing With The Alien iz 1987. i Flying In A Blue Dream from 1989. Satriani says yes Classic Rock that he wasn’t aware that guitar solos were becoming an endangered species thanks to the rise of grunge.
“I didn’t pay attention to it, I guess,” he says. “The Extremist (1992) came out as my love letter to the classic rock era, so it was a comeback album, but when I got out of the studio I realized, ‘Oh, it’s all Nirvana and Soundgarden.'”
