The much-anticipated sequel to the super hit Joker is reaping disappointing results in its first week after its release. Polls conducted by the American company CinemaScore predict defeat for the new film by Todd Phillips, and this is also reported by empty theaters.

Despite the success of the first film of 2019, which Joaquin Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor, the sequel clearly falls short of audience expectations. Audiences gave the new film a D grade on an A-F scale, making it the worst-rated Hollywood film based on a comic book. By comparison, the first Joker scored a B+, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Low ratings and poor response in cinemas

The movie Joker: Madness for Two also did not do well in the PostTrak poll, receiving only half a star out of five. This audience dissatisfaction is also reflected in the number of cinemagoers, as the film falls short of expectations. The film, which cost more than $190 million to produce, grossed just $20 million on its opening Friday.

Meanwhile, by comparison, Deadpool and Wolverine grossed a whopping $1.3 billion worldwide, surpassing the original Joker ($1.1 billion).

What went wrong?

According to Deadline, the reason for the failure of the new Joker is clear. “No fan of the first film wanted a sequel in the form of a musical. And that’s it,” they think. The premiere of the film at the Venice Film Festival was also not the best move. The Hollywood Reporter’s film critic David Rooney wrote after the Venice premiere: “For a film that lasts two hours and fifteen minutes, Madness in Two feels narratively rather empty, even boring in places.”

2019’s Joker made a strong debut, surpassing expectations with a $96.2 million premiere, despite being much more modestly produced – costing only about $50 million.

The sequel apparently failed to meet the expectations of both viewers and critics, which probably spells disaster at the cinemas, where numbers continue to fall.
