Jony Ive: Apple’s iconic designer develops AI product with OpenAI

Jony Ive, the legendary designer who left his full-time job at Apple five years ago, is working on a new startup in partnership with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman.

This partnership was first reported last year and Ive confirmed it to the New York Times, referring to his activities after leaving Apple. Although the name of the startup has not been released, the project emerged from dinners he had Ive with Altman last year. With Ive’s design firm LoveFrom leading the design, the profile describes the new company’s goal as creating a product that uses artificial intelligence to deliver a less socially disruptive computing experience than that of the iPhone.

Industrial designer Marc Newson, who works with Ive, said product details and a release date have yet to be decided. Despite uncertainty about the details, the startup has begun the process fundraisingwith Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective and Ive himself contributing. It seems that the company aims to collect up to $1 billion until the end of the year.
