Jordanian Foreign Minister: We want tensions in the region to end

Speaking to Iranian state television during his visit to Iran, Safadi evaluated his meetings with President Masoud Pezeshkian and Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri and the developments in the region.

Noting that he visited Iran to discuss the rising tensions in the region, Safadi said that he was tasked by King Abdullah II of Jordan to establish a transparent and clear dialogue to overcome the disagreements between the two countries.

Safedi noted that the dialogue to be established would lead the two countries to establish good relations based on mutual respect, brotherhood and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

Safadi emphasized that Jordan is one of the leading advocates of the Palestinian cause and condemns Israel’s actions that threaten peace and stability, and that their current priority is to stop the attacks in Gaza.

Safadi also touched upon the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’ political bureau, in Tehran, Iran, and said, “Jordan has clearly condemned this assassination. This is a heinous crime and a step that violates international law, international humanitarian law, and the sovereignty of states. We demand that effective steps be taken to stop the attacks in Gaza and such illegal steps by Israel.”

Safadi continued his words as follows:

“We want peace and stability to prevail in our region and for tensions to end. As I said in Amman and reiterated in Tehran, the first step towards ending tensions is for Israel’s attacks on Gaza to stop.”

Speaking about the purpose of his visit to Tehran, Safadi denied media reports that he made the visit to convey a message from Israel to Iran or from Iran to Israel.

“I did not come here to bring a message from Israel or to convey a message to it. Our only message, as we have stated clearly and explicitly in recent months, is that the attacks in Gaza, the genocide against the Palestinian people, and the steps that escalate tensions must stop and a ceasefire must be reached immediately,” Safadi said.

Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, was assassinated in Tehran, Iran, on July 31.

Haniyeh’s body was buried in the cemetery in the city of Lusail, 15 kilometers north of Doha, following a funeral ceremony held at the Imam Mohammed bin Abdulwahhab Mosque in the Qatari capital, Doha, on August 2.
