JuggerBot 3D launched a large-format additive manufacturing system (LFAM) Tradesman Series P3-44 ASTRAwhich is intended to solve problems in the processing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This project was developed in collaboration with IPEX Technologies, dealing in thermoplastic piping systems for the industrial printing of PVC-based components and final parts. According to Juggerbot 3D, PVC is recognized for its chemical resistance, slow flammability and mechanical durability.
Until now, however, its use in additive manufacturing has been limited by the need for fume management and material handling. JuggerBot 3D’s P3-44 ASTRA offers advanced process control and safety systems that are designed with operator safety, equipment life and the environment in mind during print operations.
According to Juggerbot 3D, ASTRA is building on JuggerBot 3D’s material testing and process control expertise to address PVC challenges and maximize process control within the Tradesman Series P3-44 base model. The system is designed to handle the challenges of PVC with corrosion-resistant components and targeted fume extraction at the point of print application while maintaining the structural integrity of the Tradesman Series P3-44 base unit.
Advanced process control
The P3-44 system includes advanced technologies. Proper safety practices to follow when operating the unit include:
- Prevence: Corrosion-resistant components extend the life of the printer while ensuring control of the PVC processing. The ASTRA printer was equipped with hardware to alleviate these problems and key control components to maintain the extrusion temperature.
- Omezení: PVC processing requires proper closure from the point of view of work safety. Additional sealing areas across the closed P3-44 base ensure that fumes generated during printing remain in regulated zones.
- Odsávání: ASTRA is equipped with a two-stage vapor extraction system that captures vapors generated during the printing process.
- Ochrana: Improper handling of materials can cause problems in production. Access to the chamber is prohibited to prevent premature access.
