Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has accused politicians from surrounding Russian regions of trying to order his assassination. They are threatened with “blood revenge” if they cannot refute this claim. This was reported on Thursday by the Reuters agency, which referred to the Russian TASS agency.
Kadyrov made his comments at a meeting with representatives of the Chechen security apparatus. He also published a video recording of the meeting on the Telegram platform. He named three deputies of the Russian legislature – two from Dagestan and one from Ingushetia – as the masterminds of the alleged conspiracy against him.
He stated that there were witnesses to their actions, or people from whom they wanted to order his murder and from whom they were finding out how much it would cost. “If they don’t refute it, I will officially declare blood revenge,” Kadyr was quoted as saying by the TASS agency. Reuters reminded that in Chechnya the act of the so-called blood feud, a traditional custom in which the execution of revenge is the killing of an enemy or his male relatives.
Chechnya borders the aforementioned Dagestan and Ingushetia, while Kadyrov has made territorial claims to parts of both of these Russian republics in the past.
Kadyrov fought against Russian forces for the independence of Chechnya in the 1990s, but later switched to Moscow’s side. He has been the leader of Chechnya since 2007. Russian President Vladimir Putin gives him a relatively free hand in governing Chechnya in exchange for maintaining stability in the region. In the meantime, Kadyrov has become a major player on both the political and military scene, as he provides Putin with soldiers deployed for the war in Ukraine.
