Kaja Kalla also understands that the US’s unconditional protection guarantee is gone forever

Both the European Union and the United States elected a new political power, albeit on very different grounds. If in Washington the decisions cause more and more confusion, in Brussels the choices are much more conventional, among them the head of the European Union’s foreign policy, Kaja Kallas.

“Kaja Kallas and Ursula von der Leyen in the new European Commission understand that the time has passed when Europe as a whole or individual countries could be behind the United States in peace. This time will never come back,” said Marko Mihkelson, the head of the Riigikogu’s Foreign Affairs Committee, in this time’s “Äripää Opinion Leader” program.

Namely, after the election victory of Donald Trump, it is quite confusing how the relations between the USA and the EU will develop, not to mention everything else.

Trump’s choices for his new administration caused some relief at the beginning of the week when Florida Senator Marco Rubio was nominated for Secretary of State. On the other hand, in the second half of the week, it was clear that even in the current political landscape of the United States, real eccentrics will join the administration – if the Republican-majority Congress does not prevent it.

Delfi’s political journalist Herman Kelomees does not believe that the people’s deputies would lay hands on Trump. “If we’re going to rely on enough common sense in Congress, it can only be based on amnesia about Trump’s previous term. Republicans are very capable of aligning themselves behind their president.”

When it comes to financial markets and global trade, although markets are currently rallying headlong, Peeter Koppel, chief investment officer at Redgate Capital, believes that Europe clearly lost this election.

“We would really like to sell to America, but the Europeans get protective tariffs in a situation where the economy has not had much to do with competitiveness for some time anyway,” said Koppel.

In the show, Mihkelson, Kelomees and Koppel talk in more detail about what these relationships will become and what the future may bring.

The show was made by Karl-Eduard Salumäe, Neeme Korv and host Indrek Lepik.
