Kamala ready for peaceful transition and challenges supporters to continue the fight – Americas

The American vice president and defeated candidate in the presidential elections held on Tuesday, Kamala Harris, promised this Wednesday to help her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, in a “peaceful transition of power” and challenged her supporters to continue the fight for freedom and justice.

In the first reaction to the electoral defeat, at Howard University (Washington, DC), approximately 24 hours after the counting of votes began on Tuesday, Kamala Harris expressed to her supporters pride in the campaign she led for the Democratic Party and “the reasons why it was done”.

In a 12-minute speech, the Democratic politician said she had already admitted her electoral defeat in a conversation with Trump and asked for respect for the results, noting that this is what “distinguishes democracy from anarchy and tyranny”, in allusion to the non-recognition of Trump’s electoral defeat four years ago and the assault by his supporters on the Capitol that followed.

Kamala Harris promised to help her elected opponent and former US President between 2017 and 2021 in a “peaceful transition of power”, but left a warning: “We do not owe loyalty to a President or a party, but to the Constitution of the States United States of America.”

Addressing younger supporters, the North American vice-president said she understood their disappointment and stressed that recognizing defeat does not mean abandoning the fight.

“Sometimes the fight takes a while. That doesn’t mean we won’t win. The most important thing is to never give up (…) and never listen when someone says something is impossible because it’s never been done before”, he declared, after having failed election of the first woman to the White House.

Kamala Harris stressed that she will not concede the reasons that triggered her campaign “for freedom, opportunity, justice and dignity” and also for “ideas that reflect America at its best”, where women can make “decisions about their own bodies” and with protecting the country’s schools and streets from gun violence.
