Karachi airport explosion leaves two dead and at least eight injured

A huge explosion in a tanker truck outside Karachi airport in Pakistan today killed two people and injured at least eight, according to authorities.

Provincial Interior Minister Zia Ul Hassan told local television station Geo that it was an attack against foreigners.

For his part, an Interior Ministry official told the North American news agency AP that it was an attack against Chinese citizens, one of whom was injured.

Thousands of Chinese workers are in Pakistan, most of them involved in Beijing’s multibillion-dollar “One Belt, One Road” initiative linking South and Central Asia with the Chinese capital.

The videos show cars on fire and a thick column of smoke coming out of the location, with a large military detachment being sent to the location, which was isolated.

The deputy inspector general for the east of the country, Azfar Mahesar, said authorities were investigating the causes.

“We are determining the nature and reasons for the explosion. This takes time,” he said

Among the injured were police officers, he added.
