Kasper Hjulmand quits as national coach

Kasper Hjulmand is stepping down as Danish national coach, DBU says on its website Homepage.

The team needs new energy after the EC in Germany, the now former national coach has concluded in his evaluation of the final round.

He is therefore stepping down and handing over the reins to Morten Wieghorst, who is temporary national coach until the turn of the year.

Kasper Hjulmand took over the national team after Åge Hareide in 2020.

“When I look two years ahead to the World Cup, I can feel that it will be best for the team that there is a new face and new ideas who can write a new big chapter for this fantastic team, and therefore it is best , that someone else leads the team on”, says Kasper Hjulmand.

“It’s not about me. It’s about what’s best for the team.’

He was presented as national coach in 2020, after Åge Hareide’s contract had expired.

The Norwegian should actually have led the national team through the EC that same year, but the final round was postponed to 2021 due to the corona pandemic, and therefore it became Kasper Hjulmand’s task.

It ended up being a great success, as Denmark reached the semi-finals, where England acted as a stumbling block.

Denmark then qualified for the WC in Qatar, where it ended with a major failure and exit already after the group stage.

This year, Denmark reached the round of 16 at the EC, where Germany was a mouthful too big.

“Kasper has delivered a fantastic performance as national coach and has advanced Danish football and the national team in a wide range of areas”, says football director Peter Møller.

“His results for a nation like Denmark are top notch, and he has a huge share in the fact that the Danes line up to come in and see the men’s national team play in the Park every single time. It is a great Danish national coach to whom we say goodbye and owe a huge thank you”, says Møller.

Kasper Hjulmand reached 54 matches as Danish national coach.
