Kaspersky withdraws from the United States

As a result of the recent restrictions, Kaspersky Lab will gradually terminate its activities in the United States from July 20, and will also lay off its American employees next month. According to the company’s statement, it evaluated the effects of the legal measures taken in the past period, during which it came to the conclusion that its business opportunities are no longer viable in the American market, so it will continue to invest in strategic markets in the future.

The last nail in the Russian company’s American coffin was the fact that the Biden administration banned the sale of Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus software in the United States at the end of June, after evaluating the company’s close relationship with the Russian government as a critical national security risk.

In addition to the new restrictions on the sale of Kaspersky software in the US, downloading software updates, reselling and licensing the product will also be prohibited after the decree enters into force on September 29, but for Kaspersky already 30 days after the announcement, i.e. from July 20 it will be valid that you cannot enter into new business in the USA – from here the company will also begin its withdrawal.

The American side has long been of the opinion that Kaspersky actively cooperates with the FSB, a member of the Russian secret service system. Based on internal correspondence, several press reports previously said that Kaspersky developed non-public security technologies at the request of the FSB and worked on joint secret projects that the company knew would harm its image.

In 2017, the Trump administration already removed Kaspersky from the list of authorized suppliers and, by presidential decree, prohibited government agencies and other bodies from purchasing solutions developed by the Russian company for their own use. Earlier, in the budget regulating defense spending, Congress prohibited the purchase of Kaspersky products by the US military, and even then it seemed that these measures were only the prelude to a complete ban on Kaspersky in the US.
