Keke Topp “not happy” about bench position against BVB

After being in the starting eleven alongside Marvin Ducksch in Werder Bremen’s Bundesliga debut against FC Augsburg (2:2), Keke Topp only came on as a short-term substitute in the 0:0 draw against Borussia Dortmund at the weekend. He was only allowed to play against BVB from the 82nd minute. Now Topp has drawn his first conclusions after his summer transfer from the 2nd Bundesliga from FC Schalke 04 to Bremen.

The 20-year-old quickly realized in recent weeks that things are very different in the German top flight than last season, when he played 25 games (five goals) for the Royal Blues in the second division.

This applies to both the tempo of the game and the intensity. “I wouldn’t have thought that the difference would be so big. There is less space. The players are more technically adept and much cleverer. In the second league it’s more about fighting and long balls,” Topp was quoted as saying by “Bild”.

The 1.92-meter-tall man will have to wait a little longer for his first goal in the Bundesliga, but he wants to continue to establish himself and prove himself as a first-league player in the coming weeks. “It’s normal that I still have to improve, I’m not at the end of my development yet. I’d rather take lots of small steps than one big leap very quickly,” said Topp, looking at his personal career.

Keke Topp has signed with Werder Bremen until 2028

Topp admitted that he was annoyed that he had to give up his place in Werder Bremen’s starting eleven for the BVB duel to rival Justin Njinmah. But he added: “I’m not happy that I was sitting on the bench, but I’m not at all angry with the coach.”

Keke Topp moved from FC Schalke 04 to the Weser this summer for a transfer fee of around two million euros. He has signed a long-term contract with Werder Bremen until 2028.
