Kerry King: “I’m not saying I’d make Megadeth better – I’d make them different”

Before he became a legendary guitarist in Slayer and started his solo career, Kerry King joined for a short time Megadethu in 1984. King later stated that his stay in Megadethu he wasn’t bad, but he didn’t like the culture of excessive substance consumption that reigned in the band at the time.

However, how would Megadeth sounded like it was King stayed? In an interview for Metal Hammer, King briefly thought about it, when he was asked which band he would like to play in, if he could choose any.

“I was almost in Megadethu. I think we would, if we would Dave Mustaine and I could coexist for four years, the band was completely different. I’m not saying I’d make them better – I’d make them different. It’s funny when I was backstage at a concert Mercyful Fate in Las Vegas and talked to (guitarist) Hank Sherman. I said to him, ‘I thought you might call me,’ and I could see his brain explode. ‘It never occurred to me!’ I’m a big fan Mercyful Fate and I would accept the invitation without a second thought.

Also, I would like to play with Judas Priestom. In that brief moment when Richie got sick and they were considering going out with just one guitarist, I thought if they called me up and said, ‘Can you be that one guitarist?’, I honestly don’t think I could, because they’re a two-guitarist band. Fortunately, that didn’t happen, but if they had called, it would have been the hardest ‘no’ of my life.”
