The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced today that it is actively investigating claims that domestically produced 120 mm mortar shells have not been functioning properly at the front for three weeks.

“Preliminary results of the investigation indicate a possible poor quality of powder charges or violation of the conditions for the storage of ammunition, which led to damage to the grenades,” the ministry’s press release stated, Politiko reported.

One of 10 Ukrainian 120mm mortar shells from the latest batch is exploding at the front, Ukrainian journalists reported earlier this month, citing numerous complaints from soldiers.

The Ministry of Defense said it was secretly investigating the cause of the failure and had suspended the use of Ukrainian shells from the disputed batch.

“Instead, imported grenades will be delivered,” the ministry announced.

The State Bureau of Investigation has initiated criminal proceedings for the cause of the failure of the grenades.

The Ministry promised that, based on the results of the investigation, it will make appropriate personnel decisions regarding the responsible officials. At the same time, they promised to improve quality control measures and strengthen supervision in warehouses.
