Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon urged the government to “respond to the courageous testimony of the Marines” on the first anniversary of the death of Private First Class Chae Su-geun.

Governor Kim Dong-yeon posted on his social media late on the 18th, “It’s the first anniversary of the death of Private First Class Chae Su-geun,” and said, “The heartbreaking eulogy from the surviving senior marine remains in my heart.”

He then posted a eulogy for the senior Marine.

“A year has passed, but the situation is still at a standstill. The police have instead handed over the person who saved me from drowning to the prosecution and cleared Division Commander Im Seong-geun of charges.”

Governor Kim said, “(In his eulogy), he said that he was scared, but that more people should know the truth,” and insisted, “What is the country doing to these young Marines? The government must now respond to the courageous testimony of the Marines ‘for justice and freedom.’”

Governor Kim attended the ‘Candlelight Vigil in Memory of the Victims of the 1st Anniversary of the Military Death of Private Chae’ held at 6:30 PM on the same day. He also visited the Daejeon National Cemetery in Jang-dong, Daejeon on the 13th and paid his respects at the graves of Private Chae of the Marine Corps, who died while searching for missing persons due to heavy rain.

Governor Kim wrote in the Daejeon National Cemetery guestbook on this day, “I will devote myself to honoring noble devotion and sacrifice and creating a just and fair Republic of Korea.”
