Upon hearing the news that novelist Han Kang (54) was Korea’s first winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature, fellow, senior and junior writers expressed their joy with congratulatory messages on social networking services (SNS).

Writer Kim Young-ha (56) posted on Instagram on the 11th, “I think it is a great honor for the author, and also really good news for everyone who speaks and writes in Korean.” He added, “As we all know, the Korean language went through extinction during the colonial era. “It was a language that was threatened,” he wrote.

He continued, “The question of whether a language that suffered such a fate could proudly occupy a place in the constellation of world literature was an issue of collective self-esteem that has persistently plagued us since liberation,” adding, “Mr. Han Kang believes that Korean literature is the language of global citizens.” He clearly showed that it can be done and that it has already been done. I am grateful and proud as one of my fellow writers who lived in the same era.” Junior writer Jang Ryu-jin (38) also added a Taegeukgi emoticon to his Instagram story on the same day and posted a photo of the Han River. I uploaded a photo of a page from ‘Baby Buddha,’ the winner of the 2000 Korean Novel Award. Next to it, he wrote, “I have already read the early works of the Nobel Prize-winning author ‘in the original language.’”

Previously, on the 10th, novelist Baek Su-rin (42) also posted a photo of Han Kang’s first novel ‘Love in Yeosu’ and canned beer side by side on her social network service account, saying, “I don’t drink alone often, but I couldn’t drink today, so I went to Icheon a while ago. “I took out the beer I bought,” he wrote. “I wanted to take out all the books I had and take pictures, but I took out ‘Yeosu’s Love.’ I’m so happy and so happy!!”
