King Frederik shows backstage photos from his first day as regent

Seriousness. Concentration. And a smile on his face.

This is how King Frederik describes the moment when he got ready for the proclamation exactly one year ago, when he as crown prince took over the throne from Queen Margrethe and became Denmark’s new monarch.

In a post shared on the royal house’s official Instagram profile, King Frederik now shows a series of photos from the day. Among other things, he is seen adjusting his uniform.

– To take over for my mother without having to say goodbye at the same time was and is a privilege of the very great, King Frederik writes in the post and continues:

– January 14, 2024 was an emotional and unforgettable day from start to finish.

He also put it into words in his first New Year’s speech on 31 December 2024.

– Many take stock on New Year’s Eve. What do we take with us from the year that has passed and what do we look forward to in the year to come? I am taking one day in particular with me. On the 14th of January, said the king, continuing in the next breath:

– The trip through the streets of Copenhagen to Christiansborg. My mother’s last cabinet. The minutes before the doors to the balcony opened. A very deep breath. Christiansborg Palace Square. The crowd in front of me. My family right behind me.

When Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) had proclaimed the change of throne at Christiansborg Castle, the new monarch stepped out onto the balcony. Queen Mary then came out and then the couple’s four children, Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella and the twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

– To come forward and meet so much support, joy and love. To stand on the balcony with Queen Mary as Denmark’s royal couple. Taking it all in – or at least trying – moved and overwhelmed. I’ll take that with me. We’ll take that with us. Forever. Thank you very much, said King Frederik.

He can celebrate his first anniversary with popular support. Eight out of ten believe that King Frederik has done well in his first year as king. This is shown by a Voxmeter measurement for Ritzau.
