King Juan Carlos celebrated his 87th birthday this Sunday at his residence in Abu Dhabi accompanied by his daughters, the Infantas Elena and Cristina, his grandchildren Marichalar and Urdangarin and a group of friends who traveled especially for the occasion to his residence in the emirate. The celebration began at midnight on Sunday with fireworks and a drone show, a gift from the Emirati friends of the King’s father, in which aerial robots drew his figure and congratulations. During Sunday,

Despite the fact that following the publication last year of images of his 86th birthday party, La Zarzuela asked King Juan Carlos that this year’s celebration be more discreet, as was the party held at his residence. A discretion that was broken early Sunday morning with a drone show that could be seen from all over the city and that ended up circulating on social networks, after Spaniards living in Abu Dhabi uploaded it to several X and Instagram accounts. The drone show, a gift from his friends in the emirate, formed the figures of a crown, the flag of Spain, of Juan Carlos I in uniform in two stages of his life, a profile of the honoree next to that of the Sheikh of Abu Dhabi, as well as the drawing of the words “Happy birthday (sic)” and “Thank you, Majastad (sic)”

King Juan Carlos spent the holidays in Abu Dhabi. At Christmas he was accompanied by his grandson Felipe de Marichalar and a group of friends residing in the emirate. For New Year’s Eve, Infantas Elena and Cristina traveled to Abu Dhabi, and a few days ago they traveled to the emirate Victoria de Marichalar and their cousins Juan and Pablo Urdangarin to, along with some friends, accompany him on his 87th birthday.

The last time that King Juan Carlos was in Spain was at the end of September and the beginning of October to celebrate the European Championship of the 6M Sailing class in Sanxenxo. On that occasion, he took advantage of the proximity to visit Princess Leonor at the Marín naval school, although he did so accompanied by the Kings who had traveled to Galicia to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the King’s promotion to the flag.

This year, King Juan Carlos also plans to participate in the Sanxenxo regattas, but the most important milestone of the year is the celebration of the 50th anniversary of his reign. At the moment it is unknown if the Government or the Royal House are planning a commemorative event and if, in any case, the protagonist will be present.

Where their attendance is not planned is at the farewell of the Juan Sebastián Elcano midshipmen, which will take place in Cádiz on Saturday, January 11 with the presence of the Kings. In 1987, when the then Prince Felipe de Borbón embarked to carry out the training cruise on the training ship, in addition to Kings Juan Carlos and Sofia, his grandfather Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona, was present.
